I have been teaching photography and imaging over the past 36 years.
In that time, as well as my own work, I have been the National Director of specialist training for Police and Home Office staff and was awarded the INVESTORS IN PEOPLE accreditation for the delivery of my training. In short, I can give you as much knowledge and information in a fun and enjoyable way over three/five days, than a six month evening course will impart to you! It will also be personal to you and no distractions from your goals.
These workshops can be moulded to suit your own particular needs and interests, so please contact me to discuss. As part of the course you will receive prints of your best two images taken on the workshop. Please note that any images co produced by you and myself during the workshop cannot be made availabe for commecial use exclusively by yourself. This will also apply to competitions too.

LANDSCAPE COURSE
These are very popular workshops and I am now taking bookings for 2011/12. I offer one, two and three day versions. They are 'bespoke' and I tailor it to your needs. Should you wish, I can deliver over three or four days and I am happy to quote for that based around your requirements. Set around the beautiful surroundings of Wast Water and Eskdale, I can show you how to get the most out of your camera and take those beautifully dramatic and captivating pictures that you'll be proud to show off to your friends and family and ultimately hang on your wall!
TIMES:
Start times to be arranged according to the season and we can start early and do stay out until late when required.
MEET:
Eskdale or Nether Wasdale, Cumbria from where transport is provided. Accomodation can be arranged should you wish which includes full breakfast.
GROUP SIZES and
COSTS FOR ONE DAY WORKSHOPS:
One-to-One tuition £175 - Including transport ;
Two people - £330 (£165 each)
In the first instance, contact me with some preferred dates and once we have agreed these, I'll mail you booking and information forms. A deposit will be required when returning the form and the balance should be paid six weeks before the course.
COSTS FOR TWO DAY WORKSHOP
One-to-One tuition £325 - Including transport ;
Two people - £490 (£245 each)
If booking more than six weeks prior to the workshop a £20 deposit per day per person will be required together with a completed booking form. If booking within six weeks I will require full payment being sent along with your forms. You will need to be fit enough to walk a maximum of one mile on rough terrain(unless a less strenuous workshop has been planned), wear suitable clothing and footware, particularly in winter. You should also ensure that both yourself and your photographic equipment are fully insured in case of damage. I am covered by indemnity insurance.
A booking form and further information will be mailed to you once a suitable date has been agreed
WHAT YOU'LL NEED ON THE DAY!:
Your own digital camera and its manual. (DSLR preferable but not vital as I have a spare Canon EOS 40D, lenses and filters if required. I also have a Panasonic G2 for loan as well. Its easier for you to understand the principles when outlined on a full DSLR and you can work it alongside your own camera).
A few pix sending to me via email for me to see where your currently 'at'.
*Spare batteries if you use your own kit.
Memory cards
*Any lenses you have with you and a cable
release is handy.
*Graduated Filter kit
*A tripod if you have one but I can supply one
if necessary
*Weatherproof clothing is vital 'up on tham
thar fells!'
*Good waterproof boots are a must
*Form of writing or 'remembering tool'. A
mobile phone with notes facility is good.
Please bring a packed lunch if I am not providing one for you.
OBJECTIVES
*Create images that reflect our learning
together and understanding of landscape
photography
*Be conversant with your camera and its
functions. Shoot manually and obtain more
professional results
*Understand good and proper focusing both
auto and manually, correct exposure,
metering and depth of field issues
*Using Grad filters to ensure the correct
exposure between light sources.
*Learn how to use 'the eye' in composing.
*Understand, shot construction, actual
composition and getting the balance right.
*Using RAW against jpeg
* Using computer software
Our experience will quickly ensure that you quickly begin to understand how to use the most important functions of your camera, and the essential techniques needed to create and deliver those dramatic images. Its all done in a nice, relaxed, enjoyable way and you'll soon be setting set up your equipment, checking and controlling exposure, adjusting depth of field and being confident.
Your confidence in producing 'that click' will develop as the day progresses.
WORKSHOP BOOKINGS
DEPOSITS - Deposits for workshops are non-refundable.
TRANSFERS - Clients who wish to switch a deposit to an alternative workshop will be subject to an admin. fee of £20
FINAL BALANCE PAYMENTS- Payments are due four weeks prior to the workshop.
If reservations are made within six weeks of the workshop then the full amount will be asked for.
CANCELLATIONS - There will be no refund for cancellations made less than six weeks from the workshop, unless a late replacement booking is made to fill the cancellation, in which case you may transfer to another workshop.
EXTREME WEATHER - This can be a very hostile environment and we take great care to ensure that you are comfortable. No risks are ever taken and we conduct a full health and safety briefing prior to leaving for the fells.
David Powell - Thompson is a fully qualified Mountain Leader and his experience is invaluable. Increasingly these days the weather can be very unpredictable. Very occasionally a workshop might have to be cancelled due to extreme weather. When this happens you may transfer your booking to another group workshop later that year.
